Make it scannable. Your subscribers are busy people who get a lot of email, so it's safe to assume you don't have their undivided attention. Instead of one long block, break up your content into short paragraphs. Include subheadings and images to guide readers through your email and make it easier to scan, and add a teaser to the top of your newsletter to tell subscribers what's in store. If you're sending a long article, consider inserting a "read more" link so people can get to the rest when it's convenient for them. Your subject line should be to-the-point and easy to digest, too. A standard best practice is to first segment out your recipients who consistently have low engagement rates and then send them a “winback” email asking them if they’re still interested in receiving your email. Track Metrics and Conduct A/B Testing: How well are you doing currently and what can you do to improve? Paying attention to the data from your previous email campaigns and testing hypotheses about improvements you can make via A/B testing can help answer these questions and take your efforts to the next level. In terms of metrics, be sure to monitor open rate, bounce rate, click through rate, unsubscribe rate and inbox placement rate. The benefit of that is when you do need to announce a new product or sale, you can count on the fact that you’ve already been in touch, having built a relationship over several weeks/months, and are much less likely to annoy your readers. Of course, it’s important to schedule your autoresponder sequence on specific days so that you know when you can afford to send an email. More than one per day and you’re probably mailing too much.
Segment Your Lists: You don’t want to send every single email to everyone in your database. If you did that, you’d likely have to send very general emails and even then would still need to worry about making them relevant to all recipients. In order to ensure relevancy, you need to segment your lists. This practice can go a long way toward helping you reach the goal of delivering the right message to the right person at the right time.
