Do you have a valuable resource that you can share with your new subscriber? Maybe a popular blog post you’ve written, a relevant video that’s been well received or maybe a simple 10% off discount code if you’re an online store. Whatever you can offer, it’s great to surprise your new follower by giving something away for free without them even asking for it.
"Why aren't millennials moving?" The subject line of this email campaign reads before citing interesting data about relocation trends in the U.S. Trulia doesn't benefit from people who choose not to move, but the company does benefit from having its fingers on the pulse of the industry -- and showing it cares which way the real estate winds are blowing.
These can be your current customers, event attendees or even that random stack of business cards you’ve collected over the years. Once you have permission (because, yes, you ALWAYS ask permission!), you’ll have a nice list of people who are already familiar with you and are just waiting to be cultivated through your awesome email marketing campaigns!
So whatever personal hang-ups you have about being on someone’s list, or potential customers being on yours, it’s time to get over them. Because, in the end, if you’re giving someone what they want, those people will read every single word you send their way and still want more. And that is one of the best ways to build long-term relationships with future clients, exponentially growing your business over time.  
Kick off with a fantastic subject line – Some people have to deal with so many emails that they often make a decision on whether to read an email based on the subject line – so think of it as your one shot at glory. Give them a great reason to read your email, such as “1-day 50% off sale” or “5 reasons why your dog doesn’t listen to you.” The better you know your audience, the more effective your subject lines will be.
For non automated emails and newsletters, you should always resend the same message to everyone who didn't open and or click your last email. This isn't always accurate, because email open tracking doesn't work if someone has images disabled. But doing this usually gets you an extra 20-30% boost.  I usually test out a totally new subject line on the resends. You can also rewrite part of the email with a different angle.
Rob, you don’t say who ‘booted’ you from using it. A significant GDPR factor is non-profits having to consent/re-consent those on established email lists and experiencing significant proportions of lists being lost because people miss the notifications or are too busy to fill in yet more forms. However, I have found a few using a ‘one-touch’ re-subscription button that takes immediate effect, without the recipient having to do anything else. It would appear that the re-subscription rate is higher, the easier it is to activate. On enquiry, I was told that they were using mail chimp for this.
Click through rates. Once your subscribers have opened your email, are they actually taking the action you need them to take? If you think that you have a low click through rate, perhaps your body copy is not as effective as it needs to be. Consider the following: Is the copy of your email relevant to the subject line? Did you offer real value to your subscribers in the email? Is your call-to-action clear enough? Is the link easy to find?

Keep Educating Yourself: Technology, best practices and everything else changes at a breakneck pace these days, so one of the best things you can do to keep your email marketing strategy relevant is to regularly educate yourself. Joining communities for email marketers or even just checking out blog posts and resources like this one on a regular basis can help ensure you stay up to date on everything new.
Think about mobile. If a campaign doesn't show up on mobile devices, it's not going to perform very well. Everything you send should be mobile-friendly. Check out ReturnPath's "Email in Motion" infographic for some data that might affect the way you design your emails. One of the highlights: According to the study, 63 percent of Americans and 41 percent of Europeans would either close or delete an email that's not optimized for mobile. Might be time to start using a responsive template.
Don’t assume that affiliate marketing is.. well, just emailing a couple of advertisements. It can open doors of opportunities between you and your audience. Create captivating and interesting emails, not only to draw your current audience in but to make it irresistible for them not to forward to their family and friends as well. Great examples like hosting a refer-a-friend promotion, life hacks and tips and tricks, product comparisons in the current market. These are wonderful ways to attract new potential readers, luring them in and increasing your email list!
Don’t set yourself up for failure on your next email campaign—create a checklist of all the important steps you need to consider before pressing “send.” These might include checking your image to text ratio, ensuring you have a text version to support your HTML email, having your copy proofread, and testing to see how your email renders on various clients and browsers.

A standard best practice is to first segment out your recipients who consistently have low engagement rates and then send them a “winback” email asking them if they’re still interested in receiving your email. (Some vendors will include a special offer or discount in this campaign.) If your recipient does not re-opt-in, it’s time to remove them from your list.

Data from the DMA indicates that segmented and targeted emails generate 58% of all email revenue. On top of this, our research found that marketers who used segmented campaigns noted as much as a 76% increase in revenue–and more than 76% of marketers say basic segmentation is part of their email marketing strategy.
