Newsletters don't just get you eyeballs. Your subscriber list is a collection of people who want to hear what you have to say. So not only are people reading your newsletter, but your audience is already interested in what you offer. Your subscriber list is a self-selecting target audience. Audience targeting doesn’t get better than that. Which is why …

While pricing varies by provider, the cost structure is usually the same. Most email marketing providers charge a monthly fee based on contact list size, with a range of packages and plans. With this structure, most providers allow you to send out an unlimited number of emails each month and have enough different plans to fit into the budget of any business.
Paid Pricing: Mailchimp offers two paid tiers called ”Growing Business” and ”Pro Marketer”. At $25 per month the ”Growing Business” plan allows for 1,1511 to 2,500 subscribers per month and allows for unlimited emails with demographic and email a/b testing features. The “Pro Marketer” tier sells for $199 per month for enterprise-level companies’ high-volume subscriber lists. This package includes more in-depth reporting and multivariate a/b testing features.

Angela, I understand where you're coming from, but it takes a shift in the mindset with things like this. Try not to look at an auto responder as another monthly bill. It's more of an asset if anything, b/c once you start to build a targeted list and learn how to monetize that list, it can make you thousands times more than you will ever pay for it. For instance, some people have built out a single targeted list, to the point of where they can send 1 single email to that list for a product or service they are an affiliate for, and make $10,000 or more in just a few hours. This is how powerful building a targeted list can be as it is nurtured and grown.
Spam filters. Email clients have spam filters in place. If you’re not careful your campaign may end up unable to reach its intended audience. Gmail is especially a difficult case; even opt-in subscription can end up in its promotions tab, away from the main inbox. Good email marketing software alerts you for potential spam triggers like: generic subject line; common exaggerated sales promises; complex layout and design; and too much URL links.
Transactional emails. It involves an opt-in phase, where customers agree to be added to your mailing list. An incentive is necessary here to spur customers to contact you. A few examples are: order confirmation email; password reset request; and email receipts. Because customers opted in, open rate for transactional emails is significantly higher than with newsletter (51% vs. 36%). In this regard, email marketing software becomes an administrative tool. However, it is still a marketing tool because you have an opportunity to include subtle cross-sell or upsell messages.
