👉 Overall, ConvertKit is a similar tool to Drip, at least on the surface. It offers very similar features, but it might be both more expensive and cheaper than Drip – depending on how many contacts you have in your list. Also, I can’t find any ready-made templates for automations, which can cause some trouble if you’re a beginner. Here’s a summary of what ConvertKit offers in terms of automations.
Sara Lowe is the Communications and Partnerships Manager at Elevation, a full-service nonprofit web design agency. Sara began volunteering with nonprofits at an early age, including helping her hometown military community at the USO, teaching useful skills to inmates at a local jail, and traveling to Cambodia to help implement sustainable farming practices in a small village. For this, we’d suggest either ActiveCampaign (our favourite), Drip, or ConvertKit. We’ve reviewed all three below, starting with ActiveCampaign. As you’re running an eCommerce site, we’ll focus on tools that allow you to import SKUs and integrate nicely with your shopping cart and payment processor, to make upselling, cross-selling and re-activating check-out drop-offs easier.
As with any free plan, there are limits to the size of your audience. MailChimp’s Forever Free plan allows up to 2,000 subscribers and 12,000 emails per month, which will likely be enough if you’re a small business owner or running your own website. But if you know your business will be expanding soon (or if you already have more than 2,000 subscribers), this may not be enough to serve your needs. Even without these features, MailChimp’s free service is far and away the best email marketing service for the least, and has the capabilities to compete with some of the best paid services as well.

Mailchimp’s marketing automation gives you the ability to create a single email—or an email series—that sends automatically based on predetermined triggers. We evaluated data from 150,000 businesses that use Mailchimp to compare single and multiple-email automations and to learn which yields better results. Our findings showed that if your goal is to sell more stuff, opting for an automation series can help increase impressions and result in more sales. But there are interesting outliers. Use our findings and test a single email against a full series for each automation to learn which one resonates with your customers and works best for your business.
Email marketing effectiveness is largely determined by your relationship to the subscriber list. Below are some common list relationships, that largely determine how successful you will be. Email Marketing With No Prior Relationship Mostly Dead. While the FDA does allow you to send emails to recipients who you have no prior relationship with, or consent to mail to, nearly every email platform will not allow you to send to subscribers who have not given you permission first....
Loved reading this! Which of these would you recommend so that I could set myself reminders on certain clients so that I can follow up with them in the future? I feel like I am doing a lot of extra steps that I might not have to do if I was using an actual marketing software. I am in the very beginning stages of getting my business out there and I would like to follow up with potential clients down the road with an email… is this a possibility or should I just keep using my excel spreadsheet!?
