As new marketing techniques and strategies pop up almost daily, email marketing has truly evolved to keep pace with flashy new technology and capture the attention of customers. A great email helps you engage your customer and deliver your message, which can make a difference between a click-through and a direct route to your website or losing a customer’s interest and being sent to the spam folder.  Modern marketers need a combination of eye-catching design, clever text, and attention-grabbing headlines to engage today’s consumers. That’s why we have compiled a collection of our favorite emails.
We just started using MailChimp because it seems to be the only one that offers a free account for small or new users. The problem is that there are so many steps for a potential subscriber to go through with both double opt-in and recaptcha, that we are getting at best complaints to worst, plain nasty comments posted on our Facebook page. We don’t know how many would be subscribers we lost because of this.
This is a multipurpose email marketing platform for the small and mid-sized businesses. It works best with list sizes in the mid-tens of thousands down to a thousand or fewer recipients. With a staunch reputation in the marketing industry, GetResponse offers a wide array of features such as AB testing, responsive templates, email segmentation and even landing page creation.

MailChimp 12,000 emails per month (daily limit of 2,000), for up to 2,000 subscribers. MailChimp’s autoresponder range is comprehensive. It includes basic autoresponders (welcome, date-based, RSS etc), as well as more advanced options (e.g. ecommerce, tag-based). The main drawback – their autoresponder editor isn’t the easiest to use. GetResponse adds another layer to the functionality of landing pages with A/B testing that can further increase the efficiency of your campaigns. According to McKinsey, “Customized landing pages — which send the user directly to the item or offer featured in the email — can increase conversion rates by more than 25 percent.” While minor, this feature demonstrates just another way that GetResponse has taken standard email marketing features a step further.
You can use its built-in email designer to customize your email style and build templates for both your newsletters and your routine transactional emails. You can segment your lists, and run A/B tests with up to 10 versions to test anything about your marketing that you want. It's a handy way to handle all of your company's emails from one service, letting your developers send messages from your app the way that's easiest for them while also letting designers and writers update emails without having to dive into code.
For this, we’d suggest either ActiveCampaign (our favourite), Drip, or ConvertKit. We’ve reviewed all three below, starting with ActiveCampaign. As you’re running an eCommerce site, we’ll focus on tools that allow you to import SKUs and integrate nicely with your shopping cart and payment processor, to make upselling, cross-selling and re-activating check-out drop-offs easier.
The free account also has a low send limit and contact limit. It’s great if you just want to send a few newsletters to a few hundred contacts though. Just bear in mind that Mailchimp can become (relatively) expensive when you need to upgrade. Mailchimp also offer two payment types – pay as you go or a monthly subscription. While expensive, the pay as you go plan is good if you’re sending emails sporadically.
You can add more detail to your emails with GetResponse, as well. It can import images from Flickr, Facebook, and iStock, sell products in emails with PayPal buttons, and even reuse text from previous emails with its snippets feature. Then, you can schedule your emails in advance by dragging them to the correct date on a calendar. And if you're promoting your products online, GetResponse has you covered with tools to import contacts from Facebook forms and Twitter ads.
You can have the world’s savviest marketing plan in place and customers still don’t always click on something the first time they see it. Whether they encounter your ads on Facebook, Instagram, or another channel, they may not make a purchase until they've seen what you've got through multiple avenues. That's where Google remarketing ads come into play. Google remarketing ads help you reach people who have expressed interest in your products—wherever they go online—and bring them back to your store when they’re ready to buy. Using these best practices and Mailchimp's powerful reporting tools, you can run retargeting ads that pay off.

Next up is building an email newsletter. The best services offer several ways to do this; you can import your own HTML, start from scratch, or use a pre-designed template. Most of these services have drag-and-drop UIs that let you choose exactly the elements you want to include, as well as image libraries in which you can store assets such as your logo or company photos. Tools that let you test your emails for spam are also essential since there are some seemingly innocuous terms that may send up red flags and drop all of your hard work into your subscribers' junk folders or, worse, get your emails banned before they ever reach their recipients.

In terms of GetResponse versus services like Mailchimp and Aweber, we originally had four sites using Mailchimp and one using Aweber. While I prefer the general features and ease of use of GetResponse over these services, my own experiments also suggest that GetResponse have superior deliverability and opt-in confirmation rates – meaning you get more subscribers, and more emails landing in your contacts’ inboxes.
